OH NO!!! I've been dying for someone to take up that particular little challenge, and to think how close it came ... oh, this is TERRIBLE! Oh well, I'll get over it.
Great start, Slarti! This does have a Scooby-Doo vibe going on, huh? Can't think of anything good to add, but if I do, you all will be the first to know.

Hehee...thanks for the inspiration for the topic title, Beamie! Well, now that I've finished the longest story ever told, for me anyhoo, I thought it'd be fun to start another round robin. This started out as a semi-serious Excalibur story and kinda degenerated. (Actually, Rexie, this was gonna be for your Captain Britain/Nightcrawler slash challenge and I just couldnae do it!!) It has no place in canon, it takes place maybe around the end of the Cross-Time Caper, and I think it could be funny. Now that the Monument seems to be over its slump I hope this really takes off. Have fun!

"Turn off that teutonic charm and get your furry arse over here," Brian Braddock, known to the world as Captain Britain, growled. He ground his large molars as his teammate flourished a bow at Alysdane Stuart, their group's government contact in WHO, the Weird Happenings Organization.
"I'll be with you in a moment Herr Kapitan, after I greet the lovely Miss Stuart," said Kurt Wagner, the former X-Man known as Nightcrawler. Kurt stopped just short of kissing her hand and instead shook it with a smile. "What may Excalibur do for you?"
"Bah! Damn the lot o' ya spandex fools!" Dai Thomas said, spitting on the ground just slightly to the left of Brian's large booted foot. "I don't have need of you tripping around, causing trouble and in my way..."
Alysdane smiled first at the mutant who was doing his best to charm her and then the cranky old detective and the glaring superhero.
"Ah, but you do, Dai," she interposed herself between the huffing men. "This is right down Excalibur's alley."
"Sounds more like a gig for the Ghostbusters," Rachel Summers said with a giggle.
"Who ya gonna call?" Kitty Pryde deadpanned.
"Oooh, I love that movie!" Meggan clapped her hands with glee.
"Ex-calibur!" Kurt chuckled, catching Meggan's hands in his to calm her.
Brian's throat rumbled at the sight.
Kurt glanced at Brian and released her hands. "So, what are the details?"
"Well, everyone knows that the Tower is haunted, probably always has been," Alysdane shrugged and winced slightly. " But this, this is new..."
"It's a bloody catastrophe!" Thomas wailed. "But there is a rational explanation."
Alysdane arched a brow at him. "Oh, and you have one?"
"Probably the damn French!"
"Uh-huh."
"Please! You said there were always ghosts in the Tower of London," Kitty shrugged. "So, what's the problem? Are they gone? Are there new ones? What's the big secret?"
Alysdane and the dai exchanged looks. "Well," Alysdane began. "It is a bit of a secret, because it's...it's..." She trailed off, her eyes misting over.
"Our bloody ravens are gone!" Thomas boomed, giving the director of WHO a disgusted look. A chorus of gasps were heard.
Brian looked thunder-struck. "Oh, no! Well they must have been stolen."
"No...they have come back, sort of... but they're different..."
The members of Excalibur exchanged confused glances. Meggan scratched her head, opening her mouth.
"What's so important about the birds?" Meggan asked sheepishly. Even the American Shadowcat and German Kurt looked at her in shock. "What? Why are you looking at me like that?"
Dai Thomas looked aghast. "They're ravens. The ravens, not bloody birds!"
"But a raven is a birdie..."
"The Brits think if the ravens leave the Tower it is a sign that the empire will fall," Rachel explained with a yawn. "I don't understand why it's such a big deal either. They are just birds."
Thomas, and Brian, shot daggered glares at the fiery celestial avatar of Phoenix, who shrugged at them. "It's true."
"Well, whatever they are, there is a problem with them, ja?" Kurt spread his hands placatingly. "What would that problem be?"
"We'd better just show you." Alysdane moved to the gates and swinging one side open, stepped inside. "This way."
Dai Thomas followed on her heels followed by Brian and the rest of Excalibur.
The sight inside those walls stopped them in their tracks.
Okay, what did they see inside the walls? When I reread this, I can't help thinking that this is Excalibur crossed with Scooby Doo! *giggle* I can't wait to see what you guys come up with, and don't worry too much about it...just have fun. It doesn't have to make a lot of sense.

Ah, I guess Canadians are as educated as Meggan as far as British birdies go... Hey! Didn't the British Empire already collapse? Africa, India, Canada, US, Ireland, Australia... all that's left is that piddling little island. Those birdies should have left years ago. Or does Britain still have Africa and India? We haven't gotten that far in the history text yet. And I guess Canada is still sort of part of Britain because we're a constitutional monarchy.

Sheemie, I think the Royals do still try to claim Canada, actually. Oh, the legend of the ravens is as old as dirt and they like to tell it to tourists. They do take it seriously enough that they have special guards for the birds and a cemetery for them. Only the British, I suppose.
Rex, I almost did it...and then I watched Scooby and said to myself, 'self, you ought to do a Scooby Doo Excalibur story!' So maybe the slash will come...later. It is a great challenge, but I would have to do it humorously.
C'mon, guys! This sould be a great, fun silyfic! Crank up your imaginations and turn on Cartoon Network for inspiration, no really..it helps, and get writin'!

Oh jeez. That reminds me of this fanfic I read years ago. The X-Men are broke and need to get jobs... they replace the cast of Scooby Doo. Oh, the hilarity! Gambit as Shaggy. Um. Uh, I can't remember any of the other ones! OH! Bobby as Scooby...
*goes off to look for it*

Found it! Mutants Unite! by Desert Nomad. It's about eight parts long and they're all in one page, the Scooby Doo section is Part 5... oh, you'll find it. Kurt makes a tiny cameo in the Star Trek bit so this isn't as off-topic as it seems. Really.

Hehe, great work Slarti...And that other story made me smile too. The person who wrote it actually seems to know German.
I can never resist a silly story, as you know
